Internet Access is a Human Right – according to the United Nations Council

The United Nations Human Rights Council has unanimously agreed that Internet access is a basic human right. The Council have recently signed a resolution stating that access to the Internet and online freedom of expression should be guaranteed.

This was led by Sweden and had support from countries including America, Brazil and Tunisia.

The US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton stated “This resolution is a welcome addition in the fight for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms online”.

In total, the council comprised of 47 members from countries around the world, including China and Cuba. Ironically, these 2 countries have both been criticised for media censorship.
